1. Cord Blood

Collect 40mL minimum, ideally 60-100 mL.
Label cord blood bag.

1. Sterilize the fetal end of the cord tissue. Ensure that the white clamp is closed before inserting the needle into the umbilical cord vein.

2. Insert needle into the umbilical cord vein, move bag below insertion site, and open white clamp. Collect at least 40 mL of cord blood, aiming for 60-100 mL. To ensure maximum collection, milk the cord tissue when blood flow slows. If tissue collapses, reinsert needle on a new, slightly higher, cleaned insertion site.

3. When blood flow stops, close the white clamp, extract the needle, and slide the needle safety guard over the needle. Cut blood bag tubing between the white clamp and safety guard. Dispose of needle.

4. Open cap on air vent and let remaining blood flow into blood bag. Tie tubing into knot below the Y connection to prevent blood leakage.

5. Verify that the cord blood bag is labeled with the provided labels and includes the mother’s full name, DOB, baby’s date and time of birth, and the collector’s initials. Place in supplied biohazard bag.

2. Cord Tissue

(If collecting)

Collect 6-8 inches
Label cord tissue cup.

1. Sterilize umbilical cord and cut 6-8 inches off.

2. Place tissue into cup and ensure that cup is tightly closed. Verify that cup is labeled with the provided labels and includes the mother’s fullname, DOB, baby’s date and time of birth, and the collector’s initials. Place cup into provided bag.

3. Placenta

(If collecting)

Collect Entire Tissue
Label placenta jar.

1. Put placenta in zip-top bag and wrap bag with absorbent pad.

2. Put wrapped zip-top bag in canister. Ensure that canister is tightly closed. Verify that canister is labeled with the provided Anja label and includes the mother’s full name, DOB, baby’s date and time of birth, and the collector’s initials.
