Pregnancy Symptoms: Find Out If You're Expecting

What are the Early Signs of Pregnancy?

What are some signs of pregnancy during the first trimester? -Pregnancy tests may be unreliable until after the first missed period, but home pregnancy tests can detect a surge in the hormone hCG as early as six days before a missed period.

Some of the first signs of pregnancy are: fatigue, nausea and vomiting, feeling bloated and cramping. A pregnant woman may feel more breast tenderness, increased vaginal discharge and more frequent urination. When you know you are pregnant it is important to see your doctor for prenatal care and start taking prenatal vitamins and following a healthy diet.

What Is Normal for a Negative Pregnancy Test?

Can you have pregnancy symptoms with a negative test? No, a negative pregnancy test result does not necessarily mean that you are not pregnant. This may happen for a number of reasons. One of the most common is that it can take up to 12 days for your body to produce the hormone necessary for the pregnancy test to detect a positive result. You can have an early miscarriage or experience an ectopic pregnancy, which will return a negative result on a home pregnancy test.

Why might a woman be experiencing symptoms after a negative pregnancy test? Many pregnancy symptoms are similar to other health conditions, which is why it's always important to consult a doctor if you are experiencing any unusual symptoms. For example, feeling fatigued may be caused by anemia or depression, while breast tenderness could be the result of fluid retention. Headaches could also be caused by stress or hormone changes.

If you suspect that you might be pregnant and the home pregnancy test is negative but you're still experiencing pregnancy symptoms such as bleeding or cramping, make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. Your doctor will do blood work and evaluate you and your symptoms. If your doctor thinks you are pregnant, they will do a pregnancy test.
