When to try to get pregnant

The best time to conceive is around the time you ovulate. That prime time to conceive is anywhere between seven days before ovulation and one day afterwards, during which time the sperm have the ability to fertilize the egg for three to six days. The two days before you ovulate and the day of ovulation have the highest probability of conception.

Your fertile window

Your ‘fertile window’ includes five days prior to ovulation and the day of ovulation. In other words, it's a span of time during your menstrual cycle when you can get pregnant. It is not the same as your 'fertile phase' because the latter is the time of ovulation when your egg is actually released.

2. Take a prenatal vitamin

It is best to take your prenatal supplement up to a month before you start trying to conceive. Women who took their vitamin supplements while undergoing infertility treatments were more than twice as likely to become pregnant than women who only took a folic acid supplement.

3. Cut out bad habits

If you are looking to get pregnant it is best to cut our any bad habits, especially ones you will have to cut out once pregnant. Now is the time to stop smoking, drinking alcohol and limiting caffeine intake.

4. Eat well

The first thing you need to do is to make sure that you are eating the right kind of foods for your body. You will want to have both a healthy and balanced diet when trying to conceive. Besides just incorporating fruits and vegetables, you will also want to incorporate healthy fats like omega-3s, folate, calcium, protein, iron and fiber into your daily diet.

5. Exercise

Exercising for at least 30 minutes a day has show to increase fertility. If you already have a workout routine that's great, if not a walk around the block, or even a dance for 30 minutes a day will work.

6. Stay stress free

That may sound easier said than done. Stress can cause a delay in ovulation, which ultimately disturbs conception. Try to find anything that can relax your mind and take it off all things surrounding pregnancy for a little bit.

7. Get enough sleep

Research has shown that sleep disturbances are linked to irregular periods and that both of these may interrupt a person's ability to conceive. Also creating and maintaining a sleep routine can limit stress.
