Dizziness During Pregnancy: Causes, Symptoms, and Management

Dizziness during pregnancy is common and most times it is not something you should be concerned about.

What causes dizziness during pregnancy?

There are various factors why dizziness can occur but some of the most common include hormonal changes,  low blood pressure, dehydration or anemia.

Some of the symptoms of dizziness might include:

  • Lightheadedness or feeling faint
  • Vertigo or a spinning sensation
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sweating or clamminess
  • Blurred vision or visual disturbances
  • Feeling unsteady or off-balance

Tips for Managing Dizziness During Pregnancy

You can reduce the risk of dizziness by following the below tips:

  1. Stay hydrated and eat regularly! Drink plenty of water throughout the day and eat small but frequent meals.
  2. Avoid standing for a long time**:** Take frequent breaks when standing for long periods, and avoid sudden movements or changes in position. Also make sure to keep moving when you’re standing to increase circulation.
  3. Lying on the left side of the body: Lying on the left side keeps the expanded uterus from putting pressure on the liver and improves blood flow to the developing baby.
  4. Take it easy: When you're getting up from sitting or lying down make sure to do it slowly so your body can adapt to changes in blood pressure.
  5. Don’t forget that relaxation is super important! Practice stress relief techniques like breathing, meditation or prenatal yoga to reduce stress levels and enhance well being.

When to Consult Your Healthcare Provider?

If you’re experiencing severe or persistent dizziness, chest pain or palpitations, shortness of breath, fainting or loss of consciousness you must immediately report to your healthcare provider. He will run the necessary tests and will best be able to identify the reason and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
